How long should it take to become a black belt in karate?
A guy at my kickboxing club said that it took him 2 years to become a black belt? mcdojo or legit?

Mcdojo. A legitimate black belt in any legitimate style will take much longer than 2 years. I worked out on average 6 days a week for over seven years to reach my first black belt. In the late 1960’s Black Belt Magazine stated that less than 3% of all Martial Arts students in the U.S.A (All styles of martial arts) ever made it to black belt. In the 1960’s children were not even allowed to train in most martial arts schools. So there was no such thing as a child that was a black belt. Now most schools promote the students every few weeks. It allows them to keep the students interested in getting the next belt. It also allows the school to charge for ever promotion. To make matters worse. They have added more belts, as well as multi-levels (using stripes on the belts) for each color belt. In the 1960’s as I said there were no children training. In the 1980-90’s children accounted for about 80% of all martial arts students in the U.S.A. The percentage is closer to 85%.
