How can a martial art that teaches nothing but light contact sparring be of any use on the street ?
A friend of mine who does Taekwondo is almost a Black Belt and in his class they only do light contact point sparring- it left me thinking how would that work out in a street self defense in real life if they are not used to getting hit in the face full force ?
You’re making the assumption that the light sparring is for street defense. It’s not – it’s a sparring exercise. This is typical sparring training, as the goal is to get the student to focus on technique and accuracy, rather than on power. Too much power exercised by inexperienced students leads to loss of balance and stamina, and so, much of the training drills center around lighter contact.
Now, you may ask, isn’t WTF full contact? The answer is yes – but only for the pros and Olympians. For the rest of us, it is necessarily lighter due to insurance and the occasional related gaming industry regulations.
Your friend could also be part of ITF or even ATA taekwondo, which typically uses point sparring. The idea here is to score a point as quickly as possible; when a point is scored, the sparring stops, the judges agree/disagree about the point(s), and the match resumes. In this case, power KO’s rarely occur, because in executing power, it is more likely that the strike can lose its mark, causing the kicker to first commit to the strike and then land – during which the defender may counterstrike more easily. In other words, when there’s point sparring, the preference is to use lighter contact.
ATA schools never use full-contact.
So… your friend is either in an ATA school, or an ITF or WTF school that doesn’t participate in full-contact sparring.
I don’t know other TKD styles and what their typical sparring is like, though if I had to bet on the insurance company holding the purse strings, I’d say that they, too, are doing light contact as well.
In the end, I agree with you, this won’t help in street defense, but then again – full-contact sparring won’t help either.
